U.S. gymnast Danell Leyva is making headlines this week, and not for his performance in the London Olympics, but for his antics with an iPhone.

Deadspin claims a woman came forward and asked if she could "submit some risque photos of Danell Leyva," asking for nothing in return. Why?

She says she had "some in underwear and some nudes" of the Miami native, who she says "sorta played" her on a promised photo exchange.

What that means is an open question, but here's one:

Before long, the woman the images to the sports/gossip site, adding that he has "done this to other women" as well, and potentially teasing more to come.

Whether she leaks more or they're any racier than the first batch remains to be seen, but if this is any indication, she is not a fan of Danell Leyva. At all.

High-carb diet tied to breast cancer risk for some | Cancer Kick

NEW YORK July: Older women who eat a lot of starchy and sweet carbohydrates may be at increased risk of a less common but deadlier form of breast cancer, a new study suggests.

The findings, from a study of nearly 335,000 European women, do not prove that your French fries, sweets and white bread contribute to breast cancer.

But they do hint at a potential factor in a little understood form of breast cancer, according to a researcher not involved in the work.

Specifically, the study found a connection between high ?glycemic load? and breast cancers that lack receptors for the female sex hormone estrogen.

A high glycemic load essentially means a diet heavy in foods that cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. The usual culprits include processed foods made from white flour, potatoes and sweets. A sweet, juicy piece of fruit can also raise blood sugar quickly. But since fruits are low in calories, they don?t contribute as much to your diet?s glycemic load.

So-called estrogen receptor (ER)-negative tumors account for about one-quarter of breast cancers. They typically have a poorer prognosis than ER-positive cancers because they tend to grow faster and are not sensitive to hormone-based therapies.

In this study, postmenopausal women whose diets were very high in glycemic load had a 36-percent higher risk of ER-negative breast cancer, compared with women whose diets had the lightest load.

In general, a diet with a high glycemic load is not a particularly healthy one, noted Christina Clarke, a research scientist at the Cancer Prevention Institute of California in Fremont, and a consulting assistant professor at Stanford University.

?These types of diets have been associated with many negative health outcomes,? said Clarke, who was not involved in the study.

So although the current findings do not prove cause-and-effect, they can give women another reason to make healthier diet choices, according to Clarke.

Lead researcher Isabelle Romieu, of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, did not respond to an email request for an interview.

From a scientific standpoint, Clarke said the results are interesting because so little is known about what causes ER-negative breast cancers. Most breast tumors ? the ER-positive ones ? have their growth fueled by estrogen.

?We really don?t know anything about what causes (ER-negative) tumors,? Clarke said. ?This study gives us a really important clue for future research.?

Diets with a high glycemic load are associated with a bigger secretion of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. High insulin levels, in turn, have been linked to certain cancers, possibly because insulin helps tumors grow.

The current findings hint at a role for ?insulin pathways? in ER-negative breast cancer, according to Clarke. ?But there?s definitely more work that needs to be done,? she said. The findings, which appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, are based on a long-running European study on nutrition factors and cancer risk.

Of nearly 335,000 women in the study, 11,576 developed breast cancer over a dozen years. Overall, there was no link between breast cancer risk and glycemic load ? estimated from diet questionnaires the women completed at the study?s start.

But the picture changed when the researchers focused on postmenopausal women with ER-negative cancer. Among women in the top 20 percent for glycemic load, there were 158 cases of breast cancer, versus 111 cases in the bottom 20 percent.

When breast tumors also lacked receptors for the hormone progesterone, the gap was a bit more pronounced. Still, the numbers ?weren?t huge,? Clarke noted. And there are many other factors that could be different between those groups of women, although the study did account for some of them, including weight, exercise habits, calorie intake and smoking.

Clarke pointed out that there is no single factor in any woman?s risk of breast cancer. But, she said, the findings offer more incentive to eat a balanced diet that limits refined carbs in favor of healthier fare ? like lean protein, vegetables, ?good? fats and high-fiber grains.

?Really, you want to avoid these (high glycemic load) diets anyway,? Clarke said.

Healthy Dieting & Holiday Baking

Ever since I met my husband, I have been gaining weight..and for a good cause, because me being plump is a result of my happiness. Yet, another reason is because I am on a medication that has a side effect of weight gain. Therefore, knowing that I am healthier because of joy than I have ever been, but wanting to shed some weight, I am cutting down on carbs and processed sugar. Meats, cheese, nuts & nut butter, and fruit are my main foods. I drink tea with lemon and sweet & low as my main beverage. The main difference is not eating breads (although I allow low calorie saltine crackers), pastas, rice, potatoes, and desserts.


I am glad because so often when I diet, I go to the extreme and can't stick to it. But I have been faithful for a week and a half so far. And this diet is a lifestyle change I want to continue.


I have decided to allow 2 weeks at Christmas time, 1 week at Valentines, and 1 week at Easter to go all out in baking and cooking savory and sweet treats and let myself indulge during these 4 weeks each year. Otherwise, I plan to stay on my low-carb diet.

LONDON ? Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a sloppy 81-56 victory over Croatia on Saturday in their Olympic opener.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping that the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the game internationally. That didn't happen Saturday as the U.S. struggled for the first three quarters before pulling away to win their 34th consecutive Olympic contest.

The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally could pull away.

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, only led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

The Comit? Ol?mpico de Puerto Rico (COPUR) (Puerto Rico Olympic Committee) is the National Olympic Committee for Puerto Rico. Immigrants don?t have to prove they meet DREAM Act criteria to be avoid charges, ICE union chief says

A top union official for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers said Thursday that President Barack Obama?s administration has ordered ICE agents to blindly ? and without any evidence ? believe illegal immigrants if they claim they qualify for Obama?s administrative DREAM Act.

Chris Crane, president of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council, explained at a press conference on Capitol Hill Thursday afternoon how the new selective immigration law enforcement policy Obama announced during a White House Rose Garden speech in June is affecting the officers he represents.

?As we still wait on detailed guidance from the administration, it?s impossible to understand the full scope of the administration?s changes, but what we?ve seen so far concerns us greatly,? Crane, said. ?As one example, prosecutorial discretion for DREAMers is solely based on the individual?s claims. Our orders are: If an alien says they went to high school, then let them go. If they say they have a GED, then let them go.?

?Officers have been told that there is no burden for the alien to prove anything,? he continued. ?Even with the greatly relaxed policies, the alien is not required to prove that they meet any of the new criteria.?

ICE officers are often called in after local and state law enforcement officials arrest a person and find that he or she is an illegal immigrant. ICE officers also conduct their own investigations and detain suspected illegal immigrants independent of other law enforcement. Normally, if the immigrant is found to be in the country illegally, ICE would bring federal charges against him, possibly leading to deportation.

Under the new orders, however, illegals can escape federal charges simply by claiming ? whether it?s the truth or not ? that they meet the DREAM Act rule?s requirements issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Crane did not specify who has given his officers these new orders.

The new directive would contradict Homeland Security?s own words in announcing the policy, which said that ?only those individuals who can prove through verifiable documentation that they meet these criteria will be eligible for deferred action.

Homeland Security announced in June that it will not go after illegals who came to the U.S. under the age of 16 and are not more than 30 years old; have lived in the U.S. for five straight years; are currently in school or have graduated high school, obtained a GED or been honorably discharged from the military; have not been convicted of a felony or significant misdemeanor and are not a threat to public safety.

?At this point, we don?t understand why DHS even has criteria at all as there is no requirement or burden to prove anything on the part of the alien,? Crane added. ?We believe significant numbers of aliens who are not DREAMers are taking advantage of this practice to avoid arrest.?

?The lawlessness must end,? Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, whose office organized the presser, said.

?They?ve handcuffed and muffled those charged with protecting the public safety and the integrity of our borders,? Sessions said. ?Such action has not only weakened our security but our democracy. All Americans, immigrant and native born, will have a better future if our nation remains unique in the world for its special reverence for the rule of law and fairness in our immigration system.?

George McCubbin, the president of the AFL-CIO-backed National Border Patrol Council, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano?s claim that the border is more secure than ever are downright untrue.

?She conveniently forgot to ask the men and women on the front line if indeed that were true, but rather she relied on the information and statistic provided to her by those in positions of interest of having her reflect whatever position the administration wants her to reflect ? in this case, that?s a safe and secure border,? McCubbin said. ?When you surround yourself with people who always say ?yes,? you will get the answer you are seeking.?

McCubben hasn?t yet gone to Department of Homeland Security leadership with his concerns about Obama?s new administrative DREAM Act program yet because he and the 17,000 agents he represents still have no clue what they?re supposed to do and what they?re not supposed to do. ?I?m still waiting to get instructions from our own agency,? he said in response to a question from The Daily Caller. ?Actually, our own agency was caught off guard when this came out.?

Crane said efforts to get a fair hearing with Napolitano, ICE Director John Morton or other administration officials have been futile.

?We?ve spent the last three-and-a-half years trying to work with this administration from Director Morton to Secretary Napolitano, who won?t meet with us,? Crane said. ?We?ve actually been to the White House and tried to talk to those folks ? and, basically, they don?t want to hear our concerns. They don?t want to work with us at all.?

?The only groups that they will work with are the NGOs, the immigrant advocacy groups,? Crane said. ?Whether it?s the security protocols for our detention centers or our law enforcement practices out in the field, those are being driven by wish lists from immigrant advocacy groups with no input from law enforcement officers in the field.?

Grassley, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the policy is nothing more than a political stunt by Obama to deliver on a campaign promise he has thus far failed to fulfill.

?The president campaigns in 2008 that, in the first year, he?s going to have immigration issues solved,? Grassley said. ?At this point, after three-and-a-half years, we have not seen any bill whatsoever. So, then as is a core pattern in this administration, you got to blame somebody else, so it [the administration] comes up with this statement: ?if Congress won?t, I will.??

HIV pioneers unite to stamp out the virus for good

Could this be the endgame for HIV? Pioneers of HIV research last week announced a united goal: to stamp out the virus forever.

"Finding a cure is going to be one of multiple strategies to end the epidemic," says Sharon Lewin of the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, who is one of the 34 founders of the global scientific strategy called "Towards an HIV Cure". The announcement came ahead of the 21st International AIDS Conference in Washington DC this week.

HIV can be suppressed using antiretroviral drugs but not cured, because the drugs only kill cells in which the virus is multiplying. HIV can lay low by inserting dormant copies of itself into the DNA of healthy cells. Lewin and others are researching new approaches to flush out HIV. She is managing a trial exploring a promising avenue ? giving people a cancer drug called vorinostat that "wakes up the virus" so it can be destroyed with antiretroviral drugs.

Other avenues include loading immune cells with genes to sabotage a white-blood-cell's surface protein, CCR5, which HIV uses to enter cells. A treatment aimed at biochemically chipping the virus out of infected people's DNA is also in development.

Colorado Shooting Prompts Celebrity Debate Over Gun Control

While the country continues to mourn the losses incurred inside an Aurora, Colorado movie theater last week, and while new information continues to leak out about shooting James Holmes, a debate has also taken shape around America:

Considering the types of automatic weapons Holmes purchased legally, should the topic of gun control be more firmly addressed in light of the latest massacre?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has made his feelings on the topic known, as have a number of celebrities.

Let's focus on two because they possess such contrasting opinions.

In an interview over the weekend, rapper/actor Ice-T took expressed his take: “The right to bear arms is because it’s the last form of defense against tyranny... If somebody wants to kill people, they don’t need a gun to do it.”

He later Tweeted: “If you go into the jungle…. Will you NOT get eaten because you’re a vegan??”

Now, let's hear from Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame, also via Twitter: “I cannot understand support for legality of the kind of weapon in this massacre. It’s a military weapon. Why should it be in non-mil hands?"

Two sides. One contentious issue. Where do YOU stand? Should automatic weapons be made legally available to the public?

Lytro Focus-Free Camera Now Works with Windows

The Lytro has made waves in the world of photography since it was first announced in June 2011. By capturing all planes of light, Lytro allows users to focus and re-focus pictures by selecting different parts of the photo after you take it.

Until now, however, Lytro was only available to Apple users. Now the innovative technology can broaden its appeal to a larger audience -- it's available for Windows users as well.

All Lytro cameras, those that have already been purchased in addition to new ones, are now compatible with Lytro software on either system. If you are using both systems ? a Mac at home and a PC at work, for example ?- note that picture libraries cannot currently be shared between computers using different systems. you'll have to upload your pictures to both systems before deleting them from your camera.

Both versions of the Lytro software allow users to edit and share pictures in the same way -- primarily as embeddable pictures on Facebook.

In addition to the release for Windows, Lytro has also debuted a tripod for the oddly-shaped camera, and a new charger that can bring the device back up to full power 30% faster.

Sheep may come across as simple, straightforward followers. But as those who work with the animals know, sheep can behave in surprising ways. For one, flocking may not show a friendly tendency?there might be selfish motivations as well.

In research published on July 24 in the print edition of Current Biology, scientists monitoring sheep have demonstrated empirical support for a behavioral theory first proposed almost 40 years ago. "We're getting to the nitty-gritty of the real evolutionary rules selected for in behavior," says behavioral ecologist Andrew King of the University of London Royal Veterinary College, a co-author on the study. King has studied sociality in birds, fish, baboons and even humans?and believes these rules of group behavior found in sheep could apply more broadly. "If we can understand how these rules work, we can hint at similar systems and common principles across species."

Selfish-herd theory, first proposed by the British evolutionary biologist W. D. Hamilton in 1973, posits that individuals dilute their risk of predation by moving into a larger group?a "Don't eat me, eat this other guy!" response. Although widely cited, the theory is difficult to test in the field given the unpredictable nature of predators and challenge of observing movements in a large group of animals.

The interactions between sheep and sheepdog, however, provide an ideal testing ground. "Working with sheep is great because you can measure their movements and even tell the dog when to begin," King says. "You have control of the whole system but it remains really natural as well."

King?with colleagues at the University of London and University of Cambridge?outfitted 46 sheep with GPS backpacks to enable second-by-second remote tracking. They then orchestrated a predator event by releasing an Australian Kelpie, a sheepdog that also wore a GPS module, on the flock. In each of three trials, the approaching dog drove the sheep in a fleecy flurry while scientists recorded how each individual in the group moved.

In each trial, the sheep ran rapidly toward the center, jostling for position within the group, as selfish-herd theory would predict. To further suss out the rules behind the sheep's movements, the biologists compared the observed behavior with various mathematically modeled scenarios. As they report in Current Biology, one of the patterns they noted relates to the kind of predator behavior that triggers a sheep's flight. Whereas one hypothesis suggests an individual will start running when a predator is within a given distance, the researchers found instead that sheep won't start moving until the dog has approached a relative midpoint of neighboring sheep. The finding suggests that sheep have some level of social-spatial awareness, possibly because they do not want their herd scattered.

This particular predator?prey model may have a few confounding elements, however, particularly because the sheepdog has no intention of eating the sheep and the latter may be familiar with the dog's approach. Nevertheless, the authors found the response of the sheep to be so consistent that they believe it makes for a reliable representation of predator?prey interaction.

"How individuals move relative to one another within groups to avoid predation has remained an intriguing yet vexing field of research," says behavioral ecologist M. Justin O'Riain at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. O'Riain, who has studied how seals move into more compact groups when a shark approaches, notes that the innovative use of GPS technology in the study by King and colleagues takes these questions to "a new and exciting level."

So you know that beach party I was raving about? All of those amazing ideas I had curated and was dead set on executing?

Yea.

Didn?t happen.

What did happen was a?most lovely, sweet affair, in our backyard with?most of our nearest and dearest. I?l be the first of any to proclaim the?many virtues of all that is DIY.?Especially?when it comes to anything baby, toddler, house and home related. And obviously food/drink recipes. (Hello Pinterest,?my sexy BFF).

As we?momma?s know, life in the land of baby and toddler takes on a carnivalesque hue at times. Wherein we just don?t have the time to put?Martha Stewart to shame. Which is fine, because our babies?

They. Don?t. Care.

You could stick a candle in a?McCain cake, let them roll around naked and have those who love and dote upon them the?most show up. That right there is all they need and/or know about a party in their honour being awesome. Oh, and the presents. But that bit doesn?t come until later.

I guess what I?m trying to say, is all of these grand birthday parties are really for us. The adults. And the expectation of presents, well ? that all up to us to. These little humans after all, are essentially?moulded by us. So, what?may be cute when they are younger? (Ripping open a mountain of pressies). Will be far less so when they start to demand or expect it, often skulking when they don?t get it. We?ve all heard the term, ??I?ve created a?monster?.

?Nuff said.

It should also be?mentioned that technically, Abby doesn?t turn 1 until this Thursday ? we had her grand hoopla of a party earlier to accommodate guest RSVP?s. So you?can expect to be hit with another round of epic cuteness come the actual day of her birth. Until then though,?may your ovaries (or other baby-loving parts) be tickled by these?
