Tonight, he covered two bulls and is second in the average behind J.B. Mauney . However, in recalling Duluth as the site of his first "major success," Hupp talked about meeting his wife Philicia.
"I'd say I won no matter how it turned out," said Hupp, who finished sixth in Duluth in November of 2009.
After the first round in 2009, Hupp had gone up into the stands to sit with his parents, who were sitting next to Philicia and the rest of the Stewart family.
According to Hupp, it was actually his parents who introduced him to her. They were inseparable from then on, and in June of 2010, they married.
They made this weekend - the same one in which Cody Campbell will wed on Sunday afternoon - into a trip together.
"I don't think I'd ever come here without Philicia," Hupp said, "and that's something we have together. Hopefully, I ride two more tomorrow and make it real special."
Hupp has a two-bull total of 172 points, while Mauney leads the Lucas Oil Invitational presented by Cooper Tires with 176.5 points.
Mauney was the last man out in the opening round, riding Full Force for 87.5 points, putting him in the top spot in the average going into the first short round. It was there he covered Smoke Screen for 89 points.
Rounding out the top of the leader board after two of four rounds are Mike Lee , who sits in third with 86.75 points, followed by Robson Palermo , Shane Proctor and Aaron Roy , who are splitting fourth, fifth and sixth, with 86.5 points.
Also riding in the short round were Ben Jones , Douglas Duncan , Josh Faircloth and Austin Meier .
"You try to push everything aside in this sport and just ride bulls," Hupp said, "but your everyday life feeds in, too. When life is good and you're happy, it comes out in your bull riding and it makes it so much easier.
"You feel lighter and you can move easier."
The event concludes Saturday night with the final two rounds beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
