I have a porch with a 6? slab that is 20 years old. It is 12 to 14 inches below my floor level of the house. I want to raise the porch to be level with my home(no step). I also need to make the slab 3 feet longer. The original slab is 24?10. I was planning on using 6? of modified gravel over the old slab and pouring 6? of new concrete with mesh. The porch is covered with a conventional roof and may be converted to living space in the future. What do you think?

Sure you can. But, that?s an awful lot of concrete. And, you may want to consider putting in a deck instead.
When I had my house remodeled, I had a studio on a slab behind the house and that?s where I wanted to put a room addition. The difference in elevation between the existing floor and the slab was about 15 inches. So, the contractors calculated the feasibility of doing exactly what you want to do (pouring an extra thick slab over the existing slab), or removing the existing slab, pouring a foundation, and building a flooring system.
Because of the size of the footprint of the addition (500 square feet) it turns out the foundation and flooring system would be a lot cheaper and easier than pouring the amount of concrete that would be needed to build up the slab.
Also, with a porch, you don?t need a foundation. You can just build it up on concrete pilings that you can get at a home improvement store. Or, you can frame and pour your own to a custom height. You also wouldn?t have to remove the old slab. It would just be under the new deck. And, if you made it out of synthetic material (like Trex), it would last virtually forever.
