Sitting and Back Pain ? Golf Club Review

Today?s fast paced society does not lend itself to taking much time for your health and fitness. Most people wake up, get in the car for a long commute, sit at work for eight hours, get back in the car to go home, and then sit on the couch until they go to bed. This complete lack of movement on a day-to-day basis is not only hard on our bodies, but it also de-trains correct movements of the body. Sitting is so detrimental to our bodies in many ways. Considering that most people sit for the majority of the day this presents a HUGE problem. These are just some of the ways that sitting can make you un-fit:

Lack of ?perfect? posture puts excessive forces through your spine

Causes ?muscle amnesia? and weakens important muscles

Can alter the curvature of your spine which leads to many problems

Reduces blood and nutrient flow throughout the body that keeps muscles and joints healthy

The first point is really important to understand. Sitting in poor posture for as little as 20 minutes can begin to stress tissues and cause functional abnormalities. Now, if you take the fact that most people sit with poor posture the entire day this excessive force is being absorbed by many tissues that are not equipped to handle it. This leads to shortening of some tissues and lengthening of others. Your body adapts to this position of poor posture because it must sustain it for long periods of time. Once this change occurs it completely affects how your low back functions. If you sit 80% of the time that you are awake how can you expect your body to move properly when you want it to be active?

The second point is also paramount to realize why sitting is so hard on the body. As you sit for long durations and don?t utilize certain muscles they decide to go to ?sleep?. We have all heard the phrase, ?Use it or lose it?. We like to call this ?muscle amnesia?. The most common muscles that this happens to are the glutes (or buttocks muscles). Not only is this the most common muscle to go to sleep, but it is also one of the most important muscles to protect the low back. If your glutes are no longer working correctly your low back muscles do more work and injury is in your future. Keeping these muscles active and healthy is crucial to maintaining a healthy spine.

So, now the question is ?How Do I Avoid These Things Since I Must Sit All Day?? Here are two simple answers that will make an ENORMOUS difference.

1. Microbreaks ? Taking a 5 minute break to walk around or stretch every 45-60 minutes can pay huge dividends in overall physical health. This gets the blood pumping, joints moving, muscles activated, and prevents an 8-hour onslaught of continual back strain. (Simple Trick: drink more water, which is not only good for your body, but will make you get up more to go to the bathroom! (that?s a microbreak)

2. Get a Good Chair ? Everyone has heard this before, but it is time to act on it! If you have to sit for a living then make sure you are sitting in a chair with great (and proper) support. You should be able to adjust every part of the seat (arm rests, height, seat angle, back angle, lumbar support, etc) in order to customize the chair to your specific body. This will help to give your back some much-needed support to promote proper spinal curvature and reduce overuse of muscle tissue.

While many times we cannot avoid the necessity of sitting it is wise to find ways to combat the detriments that come along with it. The more you sit, the more time you have to put into learning how to ?un-sit?. Use these two simple tips to get you jump started on the road to a healthy body.
