(AP) ? For decades, archenemies Pakistan and India have engaged in a dangerous nuclear arms race. Now they're also competing in a more cheerful forum. The outcome will be mouthwatering curries and soothing Sufi ballads, not violent conflict.

The fractious neighbors are going head-to-head in a pair of reality TV shows that pit chefs and musicians against each other. Producers hope the contests will help bridge the gulf between two nations that were born from the same womb and have been at each other's throats ever since.

But so far it hasn't completely worked out that way. The top Pakistani chef on the cooking show, which is called Foodistan, quit the contest early. He accused the judges of bias toward India and is threatening to sue. The producers denied the allegations.

Pakistan and India were founded in 1947 following the breakup of the British empire. They have fought three major wars, two of them over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

The TV shows do not try to hide or brush over this painful history. They make light of it.

"Now the world's greatest rivalry is going to get spicier," said co-host Ira Dubey during one of the early episodes of Foodistan, which first aired in India on Jan. 23 and will be shown in Pakistan starting in mid-February.

Her counterpart, Aly Khan, said the aim of the two teams "would be to grind the opposition into chutney, to make them eat humble pie, to dice them, slice them and fry them on their way to culinary glory."

Eight chefs from each country were scheduled for individual and team competitions over 26 one-hour episodes, with the winner authoring the first Foodistan cookbook and receiving a trip to three cities of his or her choice anywhere in the world.

There is significant overlap in the cuisines of both countries, as there is in language, music and culture. Pakistanis and Indians both love curry, kebab and biryani ? a spiced rice dish. But they often use different ingredients, and dishes can also vary from one region to another within the same country.

Pakistani dishes often include beef, which is not eaten by many people in majority Hindu India for religious reasons. India has more vegetarian dishes, and the food is often cooked with ingredients like coconut milk that are rarely found in Pakistan.

Many Pakistanis and Indians have missed out on enjoying the varied tastes of the other country because mutual enmity has made cross-border travel difficult.

"Even though they are neighbors, Indians don't know what Pakistani food is like and vice versa," said Mirza Fahad, a production assistant at India's NDTV, which developed Foodistan. "It was long overdue to get to know each other's foods."

During the first cook-off on the show, filmed in New Delhi, the judges gave four chefs from each side two hours to prepare a biryani, curry, kebab and dessert. Each of the three judges gave the team's meal a score out of 10.

The judges loved the Iranian-inspired fish biryani cooked by the Pakistanis, their chicken kebab stuffed with figs, olives, bread and mango chutney, and their shahi tukda ? a dessert of fried bread soaked in hot milk with spices. They scored 21 out of a possible 30, losing points because a dish of chicken in shalimar curry was a tad chewy.

The Indians ended up winning the first contest by one point with a menu that included chicken tikka with truffle cream, cheese kofta in a tomato and water chestnut curry, lamb biryani and phirni ? a sweet rice pudding that they topped with strawberry granita.

The captain of the Pakistani team, Mohammed Naeem, executive chef at the Park Plaza Hotel in Lahore, alleged the judges didn't have enough knowledge of Pakistani food and were destined from the beginning to pick an Indian to win.

The judges included a British chef, an Indian food critic and a Bollywood actress of Pakistani and French descent.

Another member of the team, Akhtar Rehman, a chef at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, said concerns about the judges were fairly widespread on the Pakistani side, but Naeem was the only one to quit.

It remains to be seen whether the music competition ? Sur Kshetra, or Musical Battlefield ? also will spark ill will.

The contest, which is being filmed in Dubai, is scheduled to air in Pakistan and India starting in mid-February, said Mohammed Zeeshan Khan, a general manager at Pakistan's Geo TV, which is developing the show.

"Music can unite people across borders and bring them closer together," said Khan.

The competition will include teams of six musicians from each country between the ages of 18 and 27. The teams will be mentored by two well-known pop singers and actors, Pakistani Atif Aslam and Indian Himesh Reshammiya. They will compete across a range of genres, including jazz, pop, rock and qawwali ? traditional Sufi Muslim ballads that are popular in both countries, said Khan.

The grand prize is still being worked out, but Khan said the winner can claim to be "the new musical icon for the subcontinent."

Cities where women earn the best pay

Can where you hang your hat shape the size of your salary? Absolutely. U.S. job markets vary drastically by region, state and municipality. Women, who earn between 70 and 80 cents for every dollar earned by men, may be especially impacted by the place they call home.

To uncover the U.S. cities where women earn the most, ForbesWoman analyzed data from the 2010 American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, using the average earnings for full-time, year-round female workers in the largest metro areas in the nation.

At No. 1, San Jose, Calif., tops the list. Women in this West Coast city earn an average of $67,052 annually for full-time work. That?s more than twice as much as the worst-paying city for women ? McAllen, Texas ? where women earn a mean of just $31,287 each year.

Forbes.com slideshow: See the 20 best-paying cities For women

The top industries in San Jose are: manufacturing; professional, scientific and management services; and education and health care ? and most workers are employed with private institutions. Women likely earn more here because 43.7 percent have a bachelor?s degree or higher and are concentrated in management, business, science and arts occupations (48.4 percent) rather than service jobs (17.4 percent).

In fact, California cities ranked especially well for women?s pay, with six featured in the top 20. Women earn an annual mean of $65,526 in San Francisco (No. 2); $54,800 in the Oxnard metro area (No. 8); $50,794 in Sacramento (No. 16); $50,670 in San Diego (No. 17); and $50,593 in Los Angeles (No. 18).

?Metro areas like San Jose and San Francisco require highly skilled and trained labor, and recruit people with backgrounds in engineering and computer science, which are higher paying and have less discriminatory effect,? says Susan McTiernan, a management professor at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. She adds that the high cost of living in these areas also boosts professional salaries.

The third best-paying city for women is politically correct Washington, D.C., where women earn an average of $64,779 each year. A quarter of the capital?s citizens work for the government, which offers a plethora of high-paying, well-regulated jobs with narrower gender wage gaps. Women here are also well educated: 45.5 percent have a bachelor?s degree or higher. (For comparison, in nearby Virginia Beach, Va., 28.5 percent of women have this level of education.) ?This district has been identified as having a strong male-female earnings ratio,? McTiernan says. ?Jobs here require the highest level of education, and many more women today are pursuing professional positions in law, medicine and academia.?

Cities in the Northeast also placed highly, likely due to the large concentration of top-rated colleges and professional jobs in the region. In Connecticut, which McTiernan says attracts financial services, Bridgeport (No. 4), Hartford (No. 7) and New Haven (No. 13) all feature sizeable salaries for women. Meanwhile, Boston (No. 5) just edged out New York (No. 6).

A few cities stand out and on their own. Women in Seattle (No. 10), home of major corporations like Microsoft and Starbucks, earn an average of $53,039 annually. Boasting well-regarded companies and colleges, women in Minneapolis (No. 11) make $52,243. And in Denver (No. 12), home to a burgeoning financial services sector, women take home $51,433 each year.

According to McTiernan, women?s paychecks fare worse in locales where less skilled labor is required. The cities in which women earn the least annually, all with average female salaries below $37,000, include El Paso, Texas; Youngstown, Ohio; Provo, Utah; Lakeland, Fla.; and Jackson, Miss.

Clashes erupt in Cairo during anti-army protest (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Hundreds of Egyptian protesters demanding an immediate end to military rule clashed on Sunday with rivals in civilian clothes outside central Cairo's state media building, the same place where 25 people were killed in a demonstration in October.

"Down with military rule," protesters chanted. The sound of gunshots rang through the air but it was unclear who was firing.

"Tell me council, who chose you? It's Mubarak's gang that appointed you," the crowd chanted, referring to the army council which has ruled Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted on February 11.

Dozens of protesters clashed with a group of people protesters described as "thugs" brought out to attack them, hurling stones at each other. There was no sign of police or troops intervening or securing the media building.

"We were protesting here peacefully, and all of a sudden a group of around 50 thugs came from side streets surrounding the building and attacked us with stones and glass bottles, and we responded by throwing stones back at them. They tore down our tents," said Mohamed Abdo, 45, an elevator worker.

State radio said residents in a poor area next to Maspero, the site of the demonstration, had challenged the protesters because they were disrupting shops and businesses in the area.

Protesters often say such "thugs," usually youths in plain clothes and sometimes members of the police force, have been hired by the authorities to disrupt demonstrations.

The October violence at Maspero in which 25 people died erupted when troops tried to break up a protest sparked by what Christians said was an attack on a church in southern Egypt.

Egyptians have become increasingly frustrated by military rule, though many still see the army as a vital force for stability after months of political turmoil.

"The country cannot continue like this. Things are getting worse. They have to transfer power now. The country cannot stay like this any longer," said Waleed Kamal, 25.

He was not among the protesters, but lives nearby. "If we get civilian rule, the country will get back on its feet, the economic wheel will turn," he added.

Egyptians on January 25 marked the first anniversary of mass demonstrations against Mubarak in Tahrir Square, near the Maspero site of Sunday's protest.

Past Winners of the Republican Florida Primary (ContributorNetwork)

The Florida primary has been, in recent election cycles, the first big state to hold a primary. The primary is usually held after a winnowing process has occurred in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

2012 has not been any exception. Four men -- Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum -- are competing in Florida. The prize is 50 delegates and continued or renewed momentum going forward.

Here are the previous Republican Florida primaries.

2008 -- John McCain

The date of the Florida Primary was brought up to late January for the first time in 2008, following closely the South Carolina primary. This was because of the perception that in previous elections the primary contest had all but been won, depriving Florida voters of a chance to pick the party's nominee. As a result the Republican National Committee deprived Florida of half of its delegates, according to the New York Times. According to the Florida Department of State, Sen. John McCain won the Florida primary on Jan 29, 2008, with 36 percent of the vote, winning 57 delegates in a winner-take-all contest. The runner-up was Mitt Romney, with 31 percent. Rudy Giuliani placed third with 14.7 percent. Mike Huckabee came in fourth with 13.5 percent. 4,268,602 voted in the primary. McCain went on to win the Republican nomination for president but lost Florida and the general election.

2000 -- George W. Bush

The Florida Department of State reports the winner of the 2000 Florida primary on March 14, 2000, was then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who picked up 73.8 percent of the vote, including 80 delegates. The runner-up was McCain with 19.9 percent. 1,341,844 Florida voters went to the polls. Bush won the general election, but because he won Florida by about 500 votes, a recount was deemed necessary. The recount proved to be controversial and was eventually stopped by the U.S. Supreme Court due to irregularities in the process. The decision remains a bone of contention to this day. But the New York Times reported a study conducted after the decision indicated Bush would have won the recount even if it had been allowed to run its course.

1996 -- Bob Dole

The Florida Department of State reports then-Sen. Bob Dole won the 1996 Florida primary on March 12, 1996, with 56.9 percent of the vote, taking 98 delegates. Steve Forbes came in second with 20.2 percent, followed by Pat Buchanan with 18.1 percent. 898,470 voted in the primary. Dole went on to win the Republican nomination but lost the general election to then-President Bill Clinton. Dole also lost Florida in the fall contest.

1988 -- George H.W. Bush

The Florida Department of State reports then-Vice President George H.W. Bush won the 1988 Florida primary on March 8, 1988, with 62.1 percent of the vote, winning 82 delegates. Bush was followed by Dole with 21.3 percent and Pat Robertson with 10.6 percent. 899,891 voted in the primary. Bush went on to win the general election as well as pick up Florida by 60.9 percent of the vote as opposed to then-Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis with 38.5 percent of the vote.

1980 -- Ronald Reagan

The Florida Department of State reports then-former California Gov. Ronald Reagan won the 1980 Florida Primary on March 11, 1980, with 56.2 percent of the vote. 613,585 voted in the primary. He was followed by George H.W. Bush with 30.2 percent of the vote. Reagan went on to win the Republican nomination, the general election and the state of Florida.

1976 -- Gerald Ford

According to the Orlando Sentinel, then-President Gerald Ford won the Florida Primary with 53 percent of the vote. Then-former California Gov. Ronald Reagan trailed with 47 percent of the vote. Ford went on to win the Republican nomination but lose the general election and the state of Florida to then former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter.

Lifelong payoff for attentive kindergarten kids

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? Attentiveness in kindergarten accurately predicts the development of "work-oriented" skills in school children, according to a new study published by Dr. Linda Pagani, a professor and researcher at the University of Montreal and CHU Sainte-Justine. Elementary school teachers made observations of attention skills in over a thousand kindergarten children. Then, from grades 1 to 6, homeroom teachers rated how well the children worked both autonomously and with fellow classmates, their levels of self-control and self-confidence, and their ability to follow directions and rules.

"For children, the classroom is the workplace, and this is why productive, task-oriented behaviour in that context later translates to the labour market," Pagani said. "Children who are more likely to work autonomously and harmoniously with fellow classmates, with good self-control and confidence, and who follow directions and rules are more likely to continue such productive behaviors into the adult workplace. In child psychology, we call this the developmental evolution of work-oriented skills, from childhood to adulthood."

All the children attended kindergarten in the poorest neighborhoods of Montreal, and their teachers used a carefully constructed observational scale to score them on their attentiveness skills. Over time, the researchers identified the evolution of three groups of children: those with high, medium, and low classroom engagement. All analyses were reviewed to take into account various explanations for the link that was observed between kindergarten attention and classroom engagement.

"Teachers spend many hours per day in school-related activities and can therefore reliably report on them," Pagani explained. The researchers found that boys, aggressive children, and children with lower cognitive skills in kindergarten were much more likely to belong to the low trajectory.

"There are important life risks associated with attention deficits in childhood, which include high-school dropout, unemployment, and problematic substance abuse. Pagani said. "Our findings make a compelling case for early identification and treatment of attention problems, as early remediation represents the least costly form of intervention. Universal approaches to bolstering attention skills in kindergarten might translate into stable and productive pathways toward learning." The researchers noted that the next step would be to undertake further study into how specifically the classroom environment influences children's attention spans.

The study was published online by the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, (the official publication of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology), on January 13, 2011, and received funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Fonds de recherche sur la soci?t? et la culture. Dr. Linda Pagani is affiliated with the University of Montreal's School of Psycho-Education and the Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine Research Centre. The University of Montreal is officially known as Universit? de Montr?al.

Incident highlights fate of pets in domestic violence | St. Louis Family ...

Pets are an often-overlooked factor in domestic violence, especially when a national survey revealed that 85 percent of all women entering a domestic abuse shelter told officials that a violent partner has threatened, injured or killed a family pet. Worry over a pet's well-being could keep women away from making a decision that is best for their safety.

The Kansas City domestic violence shelter has taken a step to remedy this, now accepting companion pets to its facility.

Were it not for her pet dog, a Kansas City, Missouri woman could have been even more seriously injured, after an incident of physical altercation with her boyfriend. During the argument, the woman's boyfriend attempted to strike her with a hammer.

However, during the occurrence, the woman's Great Dane jumped on top of her, and helped to spare her from some of the hammer's blows. After giving up with the hammer, the man then pushed the woman and her dog out of a second-story window. Their fall to the ground gave both the woman and canine serious injuries.

Even after that incident, the woman was hesitant to seek the aid of a domestic violence shelter. She did not want to check in to the facility and leave her heroic dog behind or with her violent boyfriend.

Workers at one Kansas City-based domestic violence shelter said that around 40 percent of women who inquire about rooms do not take them because the facility does not allow pets. This will leave those women living in places like cars or back in dangerous situations with an abusive partner.

There are many reasons why an individual chooses to stay in an abusive relationship. Fortunately for this woman, she was able to not only leave an unhealthy situation, but also find shelter for herself and her brave canine.

Japanese carrier 'blames Android app' for recent downtime

Docomo Logo

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has reportedly identified "Android app traffic" as the cause of a recent network outage which affected some 2.5 million of its customers. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, DoCoMo did not identify the app, aside from saying that it offered "free voice services."

The application apparently caused DoCoMo's network to buckle by sending out "control signals" rather than VOIP data. These are small amounts of data which are periodically exchanged between a smartphone app and a remote server, in order to check that the app is still running, and/or communicate any status changes.

DoCoMo intends to ask Google to limit the frequency at which Android sends these control signals, in order to reduce the strain on its network. However, the solution may not be quite so simple. The nature of Android means that an OS-level "fix" for DoCoMo's complaint would take months to roll out, if it were even possible. And if the app in question is a third-party offering from the Android Market, there's nothing Google can do to fiddle with its internal workings besides blocking DoCoMo customers' access to the app.

However, Google has shown a willingness to selectively block Android Market access to apps with which carriers have issue, notably tethering apps in the U.S. And then there was last year's strikingly similar case of YouMail and T-Mobile, which saw the app unceremoniously pulled from the Market at the request of the U.S. carrier. Whatever happens, we'll be watching with interest to see how Google deals with DoCoMo's complaint.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Two adults and an 18-month-old boy died when their SUV collided with a light-rail train in Sacramento, moments after the vehicle's driver ignored flashing warning lights and veered around a rail crossing arm, authorities say.

The only other person in the Nissan Pathfinder, a woman in her 30s, was hospitalized with serious injuries, said Niko King, assistant chief with the Sacramento Fire Department.

Six of the roughly 50 passengers on the light rail train suffered minor injuries in Saturday's crash and were taken to a hospital, he said.

King and a spokeswoman for the transit line said video from a camera at the crossing clearly shows the SUV driving around the crossing arm.

The collision, in a working class neighborhood south of downtown, occurred shortly after 4 p.m. and pushed the Pathfinder about 30 yards from the point of impact.

"All I heard was a big bang, and I saw a light-rail train heading south with a big truck smashed on it," said Ravin Pratab, 42, of Davis, whose car was among those waiting for the train at the rail crossing, on the opposite side of the tracks from the Pathfinder.

The train was going about 55 mph at the time, a typical speed for that location.

The light rail followed two Union Pacific freight trains, which use separate tracks, and the arms had remained down during the interval, said Alane Masui, spokeswoman for the Sacramento Regional Transit District.

"They were down after the UP trains and before the (light rail) train approached, so the crossing arms were properly working," she said.

She said the length of time between the freight trains clearing the intersection and the light rail train crossing it had not yet been determined and would be part of the investigation. Investigators also were reviewing video from a camera mounted on the light rail train.

Authorities did not release the identities of those in the Pathfinder or their relationship. A man and woman in the vehicle, both in their 40s, died at the scene while the baby boy was pronounced dead at a hospital. Firefighters said one had been ejected.

The University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento would say only that the woman remained in serious condition late Saturday.

The light rail system carries an average of 50,000 passengers a day, with lines stretching from the state capital to its suburbs in the north, south and east.

Masui said there are four sets of tracks at the crossing ? two for freight and two for light rail so trains from both systems can run in either direction.

Santorum's Hypocrisy Highlighted by Daughter's Illness (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum suspended his bid for the GOP nod to run against Barack Obama when his daughter, Bella Santorum, was hospitalized, according to the Associated Press. Bella suffers from Trisomy 18, a rare genetic disorder in which a baby has some or all of an extra chromosome. While it is always tragic for a parent to face losing a child, the situation highlights a political issue: Santorum's hypocrisy on health care, abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

Santorum's campaign website discusses his views on these matters. He is emphatically against a woman's right to control her own body in reproductive matters and is adamantly opposed to embryonic stem cell research. He is against a single-payer national health care system provided to all citizens. He opposes the first two on religious grounds on the third for reasons of political dogma.

As to abortion, Santorum flip-flops on his opposition, according to a Care2.com report. It's easy for him to rail against abortion when such ranting might win him votes.

It's also easier for him to oppose it because he has the best health care in America available to him and his family -- provided at taxpayer expense, no less. He never had to consider whether care for a terminally ill child would destroy his family financially.

Unless the U.S. enacts a national health care plan most families will never be able to afford the care needed for a child with Trisomy 18. Santorum's family will never lack for health care or face crippling medical debt -- but as far as he's concerned it's fine for your family to have those problems.

Santorum's opposition to embryonic stem cell research is ludicrous for two reasons. First, such research involves the collection of cells from a blastocyst, a blob of about 150 cells so small the human eye cannot detect it, according to the National Institute for Health. Second, such research could save the lives of his daughter and countless others suffering from her condition. It's despicable for him to fight against the best possible hope for a cure to the very condition killing his child.

It makes me wonder how Santorum's opinion might change if he was an average American with a household income of less than $50,000 per year and no health insurance. I bet he'd sing a different tune.

(AP) ? There was no crowing from Landon Donovan after he led his Everton side to victory over Clint Dempsey's Fulham in England's FA Cup.

After all, the U.S. teammates will be on the same side again soon enough.

Donovan set up both Everton's goals in Friday night's 2-1 win and United States international Tim Howard was in goal for Everton.

The former New England Revolution forward has scored 15 goals for Fulham since August, including a hat trick earlier this month in a 5-2 win over Newcastle.

"It was a little bit of an American invasion. It was nice to see Clint. In my opinion, he's been one of the players of the season in the Premier League and obviously Timmy here is nice to have."

Fulham took an early 1-0 lead against Everton when Danny Murphy converted a 14th-minute penalty.

But Donovan, in the sixth game of his second loan spell from Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, set up a 27th-minute equalizer for Denis Stracqualursi and then provided the assist for Marouane Fellaini's 73rd-minute winner.

It was a rare bright spot for Everton this season, which is in the bottom half of the Premier League, closer to the relegation zone than to England's last qualifying spot for European tournaments.

"Realistically, unless we go on some kind of amazing run, it's going to be difficult for us to finish in the top six and qualify for Europe so this is our last chance to win something," Donovan said. "It means a lot to the guys."

Amazon merchant caught bribing customers for five-star reviews (Digital Trends)

amazon-box

As reported by the New York Times earlier today, an Amazon merchant?known as?VIP Deals issued a letter to all customers that purchased the Vipertek black leather, case folio cover?designed for the newly released Kindle Fire. As detailed in the correspondence here, the merchant?offered a full refund of the $10 case in exchange for a review on Amazon. While the letter didn?t specifically ask for a positive review, it stated ?Please share your experience to help others learn more about the specific features and qualities of the product, what you liked about it and the benefits to owning the product.? Later in the document, the seller went on to state ?Please also rate your 5-star experience, we strive to earn 100% perfect perfect ?FIVE-STAR? scores from you!? The letter was dated December 16, 2011.

positive-amazon-reviews-fakeBy late January, approximately 92 percent of the 335 product reviews were five stars along with glowing?accolades within the text of each review. Only a handful of reviewers made their?displeasure?of the bribe known within the reviews. According to three customers interviewed by the Times, the letter was packaged with the product during shipment. According to the Times, a representative for VIP Deals denied that the letters were included within each package. However, the merchant?had received nearly 5,000 positive reviews on Amazon which rounded out to a 4.9 star rating.?

The bland, form letter design of the correspondence likely allowed the merchant?to include the bribe within all VIP Deals products sold on Amazon. After the Times sent Amazon a copy of the letter, the retail giant started deleting all reviews created for the product. Eventually, Amazon removed all products sold by the merchant?and ultimately banned the seller from the marketplace.

According to Amazon?s guidelines, merchants are forbidden from offering monetary incentive to create product reviews.?However, this marketing scheme allowed VIP Deals to quickly become the top seller of Kindle Fire cases and Amazon definitely profited by the increase in sales over the two-month time period. If Amazon was completely oblivious to VIP Deals operation, the online retailer definitely needs to improve its ability to discover and punish these types of merchants. ?

review-computer-handThis isn?t the first time that a seller or brand has attempted to influence the Amazon review system. During late January 2009, networking and peripheral gear maker Belkin was busted using the Amazon-owned?Mechanical Turk service to purchase positive reviews for 65 cents each.?Mechanical Turk workers were directed to mark negative reviews as unhelpful and create a positive review with a story regarding the product. After an investigation, it became evident that Belkin business development representative?Michael Bayard was responsible for the post. After Belkin president?Mark Reynoso apologized for the incident and condemned the unethical nature of the scheme,?Bayard?s employment ended at Belkin during?February?2009 according to his LinkedIn page.

Pointed out by Laura Owen at paidContent.org during June 2011, consumers should also be wary of the Top 1000 Reviewers on Amazon. According to the article, people within the Top 1000 are often courted with free products from various brands. This group of elite reviewers makes calculated choices on what to accept for review as the outcome of the review could easily alter their elite status. For instance, giving a poor review to a well-liked product may result in many ?not helpful? ratings. In addition, the top reviewers that do not like a free product are often encouraged by the company?not to post a review.?

Covered during mid-2011, a group of researchers at Cornell are working on a?computer algorithm that can tell if a review is fake. Designed to point out the fake reviews created by freelancers at Fiverr and Amazon?s Mechanical Turk, researchers found the?algorithm was able to knock out 90 percent of fake reviews during initial testing. The group is continuing to perfect the system and has fielded requests from?Amazon, Hilton and TripAdvisor regarding their progress.

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross: It's Over!

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross have split up after nearly two years together.

It's unclear exactly why the ex-husband of Kate Gosselin split with his lady friend, but reports say Ellen's distaste for the media was the final straw.

"Ellen didn't like the media attention and other things that came with the relationship," a source said. "That's one of the main reasons they broke up."

Wait ... we still pay attention to Jon Gosselin? Besides right now? Who knew!

Jon Gosselin and Ellen Ross Picture

According to an insider, the twosome broke up more than a week ago, but it wasn't until Friday that Jon Gosselin confirmed the breakup on Twitter:

"Recently, after much thought and discussion, Ellen and I have decided to end our relationship. It was a mutual decision and we are both happy."

"We will remain best friends. We both plan to move forward and focus on our separate lives. We ask that you please respect our privacy at this time."

So far, no word from Ellen Ross personally, except a denial earlier this week that was debunked when Jon spilled the beans on Twitter. Whoops.

Man charged in slayings of SC officer, Ga. woman (AP)

AIKEN, S.C. ? Authorities say a 26-year-old man faces murder charges in two states following the fatal shootings of a South Carolina police officer and a Georgia woman.

Police in South Carolina say Joshua Tremaine Jones has been charged with murder in the death of Aiken police Master Cpl. Sandra Rogers. The nearly 28-year veteran was shot Saturday morning after responding to a report of suspicious activity involving two cars near a local park.

Jones was arrested hours later in Batesburg. Police said Saturday evening that the 49-year-old Rogers had died at an area hospital.

In neighboring Georgia, The Augusta Chronicle is reporting that Jones is also facing murder charges in the death of his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cayce Vice. Her body was found Saturday morning in her apartment; she had been shot in the head.

Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles said warrants had been obtained for murder and a firearms charge.

A phone message left late Saturday for the sheriff's office was not immediately returned.

Microsoft reportedly working on Kinect-enabled laptops

It remains to be seen when or if they'll turn into actual products, but The Daily reports that Microsoft is at least working on getting its Kinect technology shoved into laptops. While details are light, the iPad-based publication says that it's seen a pair of prototypes that "appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8," but which have had their webcams replaced with an array of sensors that run along the top of the screen (a set of LEDs are said to be at the bottom). The Daily also says that it's confirmed with a source at Microsoft that the devices are indeed official prototypes of a Kinect-enabled laptop, and it unsurprisingly suggests that Microsoft would likely license the technology to laptop manufacturers rather than build its own hardware.

Abusive working conditions at Apple exposed (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The New York Times published on Wednesday its second bombshell of a story on inhumane working conditions at Apple's Chinese manufacturers. So how will the world's most valuable company, notorious for its secrecy, respond?

So far, with silence.

The Times profiled Apple's extensive use of overseas manufacturers on Sunday, but after Apple's astonishing earnings report on Tuesday, the Times returned with a follow-up report far more damning than its previous one.

Reporters Chares Duhigg and David Barboza spoke with several former Apple executives, employees and other individuals who have worked with the company, many of whom detail, in the Times' words, the "human cost" of making products like the iPad.

"We could have saved lives, and we asked Apple to pressure Foxconn, but they wouldn't do it," a former consultant told the Times. Foxconn is a major manufacturer that supplies to companies including Apple and Hewlett-Packard.

Despite being given access to the Times' findings, Apple declined to comment for either of the paper's stories. It almost never comments on any stories, good or bad. But that may have to change.

Foxconn has been subject of damning reports before, but few with as much in-depth reporting and as much harrowing evidence. Moreover, this is now in the New York Times, the most high-profile of news outlets, and the stories are already subject to Pulitzer Prize speculation.

This latest story uncovers everything from underage labor to hazardous waste to toxic chemicals. It even touches on large-scale explosions at factories.

Foxconn denied many of the reported conditions, and Apple says it is working toward improvements. It conducts annual audits, and CEO Tim Cook has insisted that conditions are getting better.

Yet the consultant quoted in the Times said that Apple is less responsive to reports of poor safety conditions than other companies.

"Companies like H.P. and Intel and Nike push their suppliers," the consultant said. "But Apple wants to keep an arm's length, and Foxconn is their most important manufacturer, so they refuse to push."

A former executive told the Times, "If you see the same pattern of problems, year after year, that means the company's ignoring the issue rather than solving it."

Cook said on Tuesday's earnings call that China was a top region for potential growth, and it appears Apple thinks it could have made even more than the $46.3 billion in revenue it announced Tuesday if its manufacturers could have produced more.

Apple is notorious for its secrecy. Its executives rarely - if ever - grant interviews. It launches its products at its own private events where it can try to control who attends.

The company is even private about opening its revenue-churning stores, and its own employees must be careful with whom they speak.

The Times has now published two revelatory, reproving pieces of journalism in less than a week that involve people intimately familiar with at least one part of the Apple supply chain.

It appears Cook, new to the CEO job, has a tough new challenge ahead -- besides how to spend all that cash.

Israeli film industry is a surprising powerhouse (omg!)

FILE - In this Jan. 24, 2012 file photo from right: Israeli film director Joseph Cedar, actor Shlomo Bar Aba, and producer Moshe Edry stand together during a press conference after the film "Footnote", a mordant tale of rivalry between father-son Talmudic scholars was nominated in the Academy Awards' best foreign-language film category, in Tel Aviv, Israel. The budgets are bare-bones and the talent pool is limited, but little Israel has emerged as a surprising powerhouse in the foreign film industry. JERUSALEM (AP) ? The budgets are bare-bones and the talent pool is limited, but Israel has emerged as a surprising powerhouse in the foreign film industry.

The Israeli film "Footnote," up for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film this year, is Israel's fourth such nomination in the past five years, giving Israel more nominations during that period than any other country.

It's an indication to the renaissance of Israeli cinema, which has grown from a fledgling industry with poor cinematography and low box office sales to a darling of world film festivals. That's in spite ? or perhaps because ? of the country's troubled international reputation, due to its lengthy conflict with the Arab world.

The last three Israeli films that made it to the Oscar shortlist all mine the country's troubles with its Arab neighbors. "Beaufort," nominated in 2008, and "Waltz with Bashir," nominated a year after, both explored Israeli soldiers' experiences in Lebanon. "Ajami," the 2010 nominee, centers on Arab-Jewish tensions in a violence-ridden neighborhood near Tel Aviv.

This year's nomination went to an Israeli film featuring a more internal conflict ? two professors of Talmud, a father and son, dueling for academic prestige and a coveted national prize.

"It's a badge of honor for Israel," said Moshe Edery, producer of "Footnote," at a news conference after the Oscar nomination. "It's Israel's best business card around the world, especially these days."

Israeli cinema was long an embarrassment. Cheap comic melodramas were the norm in the 1960s and 1970s. Called "bourekas films" ? the Israeli equivalent of spaghetti Westerns ? they dealt with ethnic stereotypes of European and Middle Eastern Jews.

Sick of those tired tropes, a group of Israeli moviemakers created an Israeli national movie fund in 1979, hopefully named the "Israeli Fund to Encourage Quality Films."

With meager funding from studios and other private entities, filmmakers rely on public funds. But even with help from the new fund, the industry still floundered for two decades.

In 1995, the government cut public funding for cinema in half, leaving enough money to produce only five films a year. Three years later the industry hit an all-time low: Only 0.3 percent of Israeli moviegoers bought tickets to Hebrew-language cinema.

The national film body took on a new name, the Israel Film Fund, and in 2000 it begged Israel's parliament to save Israeli cinema. It did, boosting the budget to $10 million a year for investment in feature films, mandating that young filmmakers get a chance to make themselves known.

It's what gave Joseph Cedar, the Israeli director of the Oscar-nominated films "Footnote" and "Beaufort," his first big break fresh out of film school: The Israel Film Fund supported his first feature, "Time of Favor," which debuted in 2000.

"We didn't know him, but he had enthusiasm. There was something about his passion," said Katriel Schory, executive director of the national fund. "We took a chance."

In the past, "cinema funds would not support a filmmaker's first feature," said Renen Schorr, founder and director of the Sam Spiegel Film & Television School in Jerusalem. "Today, Israel wants young people to make their first films."

The boost in public funding has dovetailed with investments in Israeli cinema by European and Canadian producers, totaling about $15 million and increasing the number of films Israel puts out annually to nearly 20, according to the Film Fund.

Israel's television industry has also blossomed in recent years. After cable channels and a commercial TV station broke the monopoly and monotony of a lone state-run channel in the early 90s, there was a sudden need for new TV content, spurring competition and creativity among local screenwriters.

Now Hollywood TV executives are taking notice, adapting Israeli shows for American audiences. Showtime's hit thriller "Homeland" is adapted from the Israeli drama "Prisoners of War," the NBC game show "Who's Still Standing" originated in Israel, and other Israeli adaptations are currently in development for American TV.

Despite the surge in budgets, funding is a fraction of public money available for filmmakers in European countries.

While Israel has scored some Academy Award nominations in recent years, it hasn't won. None of the 10 Israeli films that made the best foreign language film shortlist over the years has won the big prize.

Now the focus is on Cedar, director of "Footnote," but he told reporters that the coveted Oscar isn't the only measure of success for a filmmaker.

That is exactly the lesson that his Oscar-nominated film imparts, he said.

"'Footnote' deals with the question of what happens when, while you're living your daily life, a prize is offered, which really takes over your moral reasoning and changes your perspective and sometimes completely destroys your perspective," Cedar said, summarizing the main plot line of his movie.
