Past Winners of the Republican Florida Primary (ContributorNetwork)

The Florida primary has been, in recent election cycles, the first big state to hold a primary. The primary is usually held after a winnowing process has occurred in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

2012 has not been any exception. Four men -- Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum -- are competing in Florida. The prize is 50 delegates and continued or renewed momentum going forward.

Here are the previous Republican Florida primaries.

2008 -- John McCain

The date of the Florida Primary was brought up to late January for the first time in 2008, following closely the South Carolina primary. This was because of the perception that in previous elections the primary contest had all but been won, depriving Florida voters of a chance to pick the party's nominee. As a result the Republican National Committee deprived Florida of half of its delegates, according to the New York Times. According to the Florida Department of State, Sen. John McCain won the Florida primary on Jan 29, 2008, with 36 percent of the vote, winning 57 delegates in a winner-take-all contest. The runner-up was Mitt Romney, with 31 percent. Rudy Giuliani placed third with 14.7 percent. Mike Huckabee came in fourth with 13.5 percent. 4,268,602 voted in the primary. McCain went on to win the Republican nomination for president but lost Florida and the general election.

2000 -- George W. Bush

The Florida Department of State reports the winner of the 2000 Florida primary on March 14, 2000, was then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who picked up 73.8 percent of the vote, including 80 delegates. The runner-up was McCain with 19.9 percent. 1,341,844 Florida voters went to the polls. Bush won the general election, but because he won Florida by about 500 votes, a recount was deemed necessary. The recount proved to be controversial and was eventually stopped by the U.S. Supreme Court due to irregularities in the process. The decision remains a bone of contention to this day. But the New York Times reported a study conducted after the decision indicated Bush would have won the recount even if it had been allowed to run its course.

1996 -- Bob Dole

The Florida Department of State reports then-Sen. Bob Dole won the 1996 Florida primary on March 12, 1996, with 56.9 percent of the vote, taking 98 delegates. Steve Forbes came in second with 20.2 percent, followed by Pat Buchanan with 18.1 percent. 898,470 voted in the primary. Dole went on to win the Republican nomination but lost the general election to then-President Bill Clinton. Dole also lost Florida in the fall contest.

1988 -- George H.W. Bush

The Florida Department of State reports then-Vice President George H.W. Bush won the 1988 Florida primary on March 8, 1988, with 62.1 percent of the vote, winning 82 delegates. Bush was followed by Dole with 21.3 percent and Pat Robertson with 10.6 percent. 899,891 voted in the primary. Bush went on to win the general election as well as pick up Florida by 60.9 percent of the vote as opposed to then-Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis with 38.5 percent of the vote.

1980 -- Ronald Reagan

The Florida Department of State reports then-former California Gov. Ronald Reagan won the 1980 Florida Primary on March 11, 1980, with 56.2 percent of the vote. 613,585 voted in the primary. He was followed by George H.W. Bush with 30.2 percent of the vote. Reagan went on to win the Republican nomination, the general election and the state of Florida.

1976 -- Gerald Ford

According to the Orlando Sentinel, then-President Gerald Ford won the Florida Primary with 53 percent of the vote. Then-former California Gov. Ronald Reagan trailed with 47 percent of the vote. Ford went on to win the Republican nomination but lose the general election and the state of Florida to then former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter.
